History

The story of Taman Bebek dates back to the 1930s, when the American ethno-musicologist, Colin McPhee and his anthropologist wife, Jane Belo built a Balinese house and beautiful garden on the edge of the ridge above the magnificent Ayung River valley. During the 1930s this was playground and source of inspirations to the rich and famous, as well as musicologists, anthropologists and novelists— such as Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson, Barbara Hutton, Walter Spies and Betty Waterson.

In 1980, when Bali lover, landscape artist and writer Made Wijaya acquired the land, only the foundations of these houses remained – the view, however, was still magnificent and unspoiled.
A number of cottages, approximating the scale and layout of the original pavilions, were slowly built and Taman Bebek was born. During the following decades, Wijaya continued with McPhee's tradition of searching for higher aesthetics while hosting flamboyant guests.

Today Taman Bebek is composed of 6 large one-bedroom villas and 2 Classic Rooms, an infinite swimming pool and a café/library (currently under renovation).

Hark back to the prewar heyday of the Ubud art colony

A true boutique hotel in the heart of Sayan village, Taman Bebek offers amazing value at one of the best locations in the Ubud area, nestled betwixt the five-star international brands on the prestigious Ayung River gorge. Created under the close supervision of Made Wijaya, Bali’s legendary designer, the hotel offers traditional bungalow accommodations that hark back to the prewar heyday of the Ubud art colony and four comfortable new contemporary suites. Every room is unique, finished with Wijaya’s heart-lifting blend of classic tropical design and enlightened whimsy, with handcarved furniture and fabrics in vibrant colors you’ve never seen before. Just beyond the visitor’s terrace or balcony beckons a lush riot of a tropical garden, artfully orchestrated to guide the eye to the natural masterpiece of the gorge. Minutes from central Ubud, Sayan now has a choice of fine restaurants and shops which makes it possible to go for days without getting into a car.” – Jamie James.
